As I sit here pondering on a movie I have just watched, I am reminded of Mark Twain’s famous quote, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” And that is exactly what the movie “Another Earth” does, it starts off with a bang.
The plot revolves around the discovery of an exact replica of our planet, dubbed “Earth 2”, which suddenly appears in the sky. The movie takes us on a journey exploring how humanity reacts to this unprecedented event and how it affects the lives of two main characters – Rhoda and John.
Rhoda Williams, played by Brit Marling, is a young woman who has been accepted into an astrophysics program at MIT but has her life derailed after causing a tragic accident while driving under the influence. John Burroughs, portrayed by William Mapother, is a celebrated composer who suffers great loss and grief as a result of Rhoda’s actions.
The storyline follows Rhoda as she comes to terms with her past mistakes and tries to make amends with John. But as Earth 2 draws closer to our world, it creates opportunities for this broken pair to start anew.
