Ernest Hemingway once said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” However, in the case of the movie Army of One, loyalty takes on a new meaning. Directed by Larry Charles and starring Nicolas Cage as the lead role, this movie follows the story of an American man trying to fulfill his God-given mission.
The storyline is based on a true story that began with Gary Faulkner, an ex-convict and unemployed handyman from Colorado. Faulkner’s mission was to track down and capture Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan using nothing but his hunting knife. The plot in the movie keeps up with this same theme with Cage playing Gary Faulkner.
Cage’s character, Faulkner, starts hearing the voice of God who commands him to travel to Pakistan and capture Bin Laden. With no military training whatsoever, he sets out on his journey with unshakeable faith that he will succeed against all odds. Along the way he meets some interesting characters such as Russell Brand’s character from Scotland who helps him finance his trip.
The cast of Army of One is not just limited to Nicolas Cage and Russell Brand; it also includes Wendi McLendon-Covey who plays Marci Mitchell – Faulkner’s best friend. Ken Marino plays Roy Kevin Pollak plays CIA agent Brauer and Rainn Wilson also makes an appearance.
One notable quote from this movie was when Russell Brand tells Nicolass Cage’s character: “You’re like a suicide bomber without a bomb.” Cage’s performance is quite exceptional in portraying a man possessed by extreme visions.
The film was released straight to video in North America but aired in cinemas internationally. It was not very popular at the box office but still managed to gain some traction through DVD sales and digital downloads.
The filming took place mainly in Morocco although most scenes were supposed to take place in Pakistan; due to security concerns filming there wasn’t possible. However, the scenic beauty of Morocco served as a perfect substitute.
The overall evaluation of this movie wasn’t too impressive. The score in Rotten Tomatoes was a mere 13%, though critics did enjoy Nicolas Cage’s performance in the lead role.
As for cinematography, there are no flashy special effects or action sequences to be found. This movie is more character-driven than anything else. However, Larry Charles’ direction keeps things interesting and engaging throughout.
Army of One could have done way better in awards but it passed by without receiving any major nominations or wins. The film didn’t receive much attention from the Academy Awards but it did win Best Comedy at the 2017 Montana Independent Film Festival.
The opinion of most film critics is that the plot is quite absurd and ridiculous which makes it pretty hard to watch if you’re not into such things. To those who are into such films, Army of One can be quite a gem to behold.
One notable scene was when Nicolass Cage’s character Faulkner goes into a building to try and capture Bin Laden only to mistake him for someone else and capturing him instead leading up to an absurd moment which ends up being a hilarious one.
Filming this movie must have had its challenges like finding suitable locations that resemble Pakistan and shooting with set designs that represent bin Laden’s hideouts. Somehow the crew managed all these challenges quite well and made it look totally believable.
The soundtracks used in the movie were mainly composed by David Newman who previously worked on other popular movies such as Anastasia, Matilda, Ice Age and many others.
Looking through an analysis perspective, besides Nicolas Cage’s brilliant performance there isn’t much depth to this movie. Unless you’re excited about seeing an over-the-top American man trying to capture Bin Laden out of religious fervor with hilarious consequences then you might not find satisfactory enjoyment from it.
Finally, the special effects used in Army of One are not extravagant compared to other movies with similar genres. However, the crew’s efforts in making everything look authentic deserve praise.
In conclusion, Army of One is an enjoyable movie if you’re prepared to enter an absurd world where there are no limits to what can happen. It’s not a movie that you should take too seriously but just sit back and enjoy it as a comedy flick. Only then can you truly appreciate this film.
