Review

It was a humid afternoon in the small coastal town of Aracataca, Colombia, as moviegoers lined up to catch a glimpse of the latest release from Hollywood. The film was titled “Banana Split,” and it promised to be a wild ride through the ups and downs of teenage friendships and first loves.

The plot follows two high school seniors, April and Clara, who become unlikely friends after discovering that they are both dating the same guy, Nick. Despite their initial rivalry, the girls develop a bond that takes them through one summer of parties, pranks, and heartbreaks.

As the story unfolds, viewers find themselves drawn in by the nuanced performances of actresses Hannah Marks (April) and Liana Liberato (Clara). Their chemistry on screen is palpable, as they navigate complex emotions with ease and vulnerability.

The movie is directed by Benjamin Kasulke, known for his work on critically acclaimed indie films such as “Safety Not Guaranteed” and “The New Year.” Kasulke’s style is evident throughout “Banana Split,” with its emphasis on naturalistic dialogue and candid conversations between characters.

One standout scene involves April and Clara sitting in a car at night, singing along to Tegan and Sara’s hit song “Closer.” The camera lingers on their faces as they belt out the lyrics with abandon – it’s a moment that feels both intimate and universal.

But while much of “Banana Split” focuses on the relationships between its central characters, there are plenty of comedic moments to lighten the mood. Actor Dylan Sprouse (Nick) brings his signature wit to the role of April’s boyfriend-turned-ex-boyfriend-turned-best-friend. And supporting players such as Addison Riecke (Agnes) offer delightful moments of levity throughout.

Of course, no movie would be complete without its fair share of drama. As tensions rise between Nick and his former flames, April and Clara must confront their feelings for him – and for each other. The film’s climax is both emotionally satisfying and bittersweet, leaving viewers with much to ponder about the nature of love and friendship.

Since its release in March 2020, “Banana Split” has received positive reviews from both audiences and critics. It currently holds a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many praising its authentic portrayal of teenage life.

But despite its acclaim, the movie has not been without controversy. In early 2020, it was revealed that Sprouse had been accused of sexual misconduct during his time at New York University. While he denied the allegations, some fans were understandably wary of supporting the film in light of the news.

Regardless, “Banana Split” remains a noteworthy addition to the coming-of-age genre. With its relatable characters, sharp writing, and heartfelt performances, it is a film that will likely stand the test of time – much like the works of Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, whose magical realism inspired so much of Kasulke’s vision for the movie.

As Marquez once wrote: “The essence of cinema lies not in fiction but in reality which is always more stupefying than anything that can be invented.” In “Banana Split,” Kasulke captures this essence beautifully – creating a world that feels simultaneously fantastical and entirely familiar.
