This movie is unique in so many ways. For starters, it features an all-German cast speaking in their native language, adding to its authenticity. Furthermore, it’s based on actual events that took place in 1945 when young Willi Herold discovered an abandoned car with a captain’s uniform inside. He put it on and began issuing orders to anyone who would listen, claiming that he had been sent by Hitler himself.
At first glance, The Captain appears to be just another war movie set during World War II. But what makes this film so captivating is how it explores the question: what would you do if you were given absolute power? The protagonist in this film is not inherently evil or malicious; he simply wants to survive. However, as he becomes more embroiled in his own deception and given more responsibility over life and death decisions , its evident things can get out of control very quickly.
Max Hubacher plays the protagonist brilliantly, effortlessly switching between vulnerability and confidence as his character progresses through different phases of leadership. His performance makes it easy for audiences to empathize with his plight and understand why he made certain choices.
